I am going to say something unpopular: dog parks are not good for most dogs. Not because dogs should not play. But because most dog parks are chaotic, unstructured, and create more behavioral problems than they solve.
I see the consequences weekly — dogs that were fine before they started going to the park, now reactive on leash, anxious around other dogs, or practicing rude greeting behavior that gets them in trouble everywhere else.
One-on-one playdates with dogs you know and trust. You control the environment, the energy level, and the duration. This is real socialization.
A structured environment where dogs learn to exist around other dogs without losing their minds. They practice focus, impulse control, and calm behavior in the presence of distractions.
Long-line walks in quiet areas where your dog can sniff, explore, and move at their own pace. This is more mentally fulfilling than 30 minutes of chaos at the park.
Expose your dog to other dogs at a distance where they can observe without reacting. Reward calm behavior. Gradually decrease distance over time. This builds a dog that is neutral around other dogs — which is the actual goal.
If your dog is genuinely social, has a solid recall, you go during off-peak hours, and you leave at the first sign of overarousal — a dog park can be fine. But that describes maybe 20% of the dogs I see.
